Port employees’ agitation has intensified due to various measures taken to suppress trade union activists by Port officials following the failure in the discussion between the Port administration and the newly formed trade union alliance. The discussion was based on six demands forwarded by the trade union alliance on behalf of the employees.
The demands included the increase of employee salaries; repay the 20% allowance that has been slashed, repay overtime that has been slashed; stop services belonging to the Port from being handed over to the private sector and stop corruption. |

The Ports Authority administration had refused to accept the demands claiming the performance of the Port has not been satisfactory due to the global recession. The talks however have failed when representatives of the trade union alliance questioned the administration on the wastage at the Ports Authority due to the actions of various political henchmen.
Soon after the talks ended, one of the trade union leaders R.M.S. Ranasinghe had been transferred with immediate effect to the Galle Port and an order had also been issued to remove another trade union office from the Port premises. These suppressive measures have angered the employees and the trade union alliance is to now take stern action against these measures.
