President sponsors trip for members of the clergy to visit Brussels

2009-10-10 | 9.30 PM
Foreign Ministry sources said the President has decided to send several members of the clergy like Ven. Bellanvila Wimalaratane Thero, Ven. Kamburugamuve Vajira and Bishop Malcolm Ranjtih to Brussels to request members of the EU to renew the GSP+ facility to Sri Lanka.

The trip is scheduled to take place between November 2 and 8 and the President has ordered the Foreign Ministry to provide the necessary facilities including five star accommodation to the members of the clergy during their visit.

Foreign Ministry officials have said there was a conflict in the government’s approach to the GSP+ facility as the President on one hand claims the country does not need the GSP+ facility while on the other he is even planning
to send members of the clergy to lobby for the facility on behalf of the country.
