Sources from the office of the Leader of the House said the President has decided to hold a referendum to extend the term of parliament by three years after the Presidential election in January and the Defence Secretary is also supportive of such a move.
The term of the current parliament ends on April 22, 2010. The decision to extend the term of parliament without holding a general election has been opposed by several ministers including Nimal Siripala de Silva and Dinesh Gunawardena.
It is also reported that the President has agreed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to restructure and combine the state transport, health and education |

sectors with the private sector and to privatize the CEB and state banks within three years after receiving the people’s mandate.
However, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva had told several ministers who had arrived in his office in parliament after the emergency debate that everyone should prepare for a general election as the pressure mounting against the decision to hold a referendum to extend the period of parliament might prompt the President to change his plans and call for a general election before April next year.
