Ports Minister Dilan Perera it is learnt has scored points with the President on the 4th by presenting him with an ID card of a UNP supporter who was attacked in Deniyaya when a group of UNPers tried to visit the palace in Bevaraliya.

SLFP Deniyaya organizer Vijaya Dahanayake’s supporters attacked the group of UNPers who tried to visit the palace in Bevaraliya.

The President had received information on the 3rd from state intelligence units that a group of UNPers were planning to march towards the Bevaraliya palace in Deniyaya the following day.
The President had immediately telephoned Vijaya Dahanayake and informed him that he was in need of a personal favor. The President had first apologized to Vijaya Dahanayake for all the harassment he had been subjected to by Thusitha Ranawaka (the President’s sister Gandhini’s husband) and requested for his help on a personal level.

Vijaya Dahanayake had then made arrangements for his supporters to attack the group of UNPers including parliamentarians who visited Bevaraliya to see the palace and Minister Dilan Perera had stood by the side and supported the attack.

Soon after the group of UNPers left the area, one of Vijaya Dahanayake’s supporters had picked up the ID card and after confirming that it belonged to a UNP supporter, Dilan Perera had requested the ID card saying he would return it to UNP Secretary Tissa Attanayake.

Dilan Perera had then attended the President’s rally in Matara and handed the ID card to him in order to score points. The President had then patted Dilan’s back for the good work and handed the ID card to Minister Dullas Alahapperuma asking him to keep it as a souvenir.

Although it is illegal to hold on to an ID card belonging to another, the ID card of the UNP supporter is now in the hands of Minister Dullas Alahapperuma.
