UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a special press conference summoned at his residence that the UNP Working Committee has unanimously approved on Monday (5) the formation of the opposition alliance based on 10 basic policies.

The UNP General Secretary Said the SLMC, DPF and the SLFP (M) Wing have already agreed to join the alliance and that 15 other recognized political parties along with several other civil society organizations have expressed interest in joining the alliance.

Sources also said the SLMC has permitted its Leader to agree to the formation of the alliance.

A senior UNP parliamentarian told Lanka News Web that given the present situation, the formation of the alliance would be officially announced shortly.
