Divaina journalists lodge complaint with CID against Lanka News Web

2009-10-04 | 3.15 PM
The Divaina newspaper has reported that the CID has launched an investigation under the supervision of the IGP on false reports carried in the Mirisa and Lanka News Web sites against two Divaina journalists.

The report states that the two journalists have been faced with a difficult situation following a story carried in this website claiming the respective Divaina journalists were closely associated with SSP Lakshman Cooray who has been arrested for allegedly helping the Tiger terrorists carry out several attacks including the assassination of Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.

The Divaina story further states that the two websites are being maintained by the JDS group in Germany and that IGP Jayantha Wickremaratne has ordered the CID to launch an immediate

investigation into the matter.

Editor’s note:

We are grateful that the IGP has immediately launched a special investigation into the complaint lodged by the two Divaina journalists. We carried the story quoting details received by an official from the office of Chief of National Intelligence, Retired Major General Kapila Hendevitharana.

Also, the CID would be able to get a complete report about this from head of the Terrorism Investigations Department (TID) Chandra Vakishta, since they have detained and are interrogating Lakshman Cooray. We would also provide a report about it if a request is made from us through our e-mail address.

Our website has no affiliation to the Mirisa website and so far has no links with the JDS group. However, we reiterate that we are ready to work together with such websites and groups on common issues like media freedom and democracy.

We would like to remind at this moment that Keerthi Warnakulasuriya who is now trying to become one of President Mahinda Rajapakse’s closest journalists worked against Mahinda Rajapakse when he was the editor of the late Sripathi Sooriyarachchi’s Lakmina newspaper. He worked as the editor of the Lakmina newspaper while being employed at the Divaina newspaper and also tried to get the Opposition Leader arrested by publishing an article under the headline, “Opposition Leader conspires to kill the President.”
