The policy proposals presented by UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on the formation of an opposition alliance to contest the general election was accepted by the SLMC, SLFP (M) Wing and the DPF at a meeting held yesterday evening, sources from the Opposition Leader’s Office said.

The meeting that was held at the Opposition Leader’s Office at Cambridge Place was attended by Nizam Kariyappar from the SLMC, Mano Ganeshan from the DPF and Mangala Samaraweera from the SLFP (M) Wing.

It was then decided to sign a memorandum of understanding between the UNP and these three parties and to then hold discussions with other political parties
and civil society organizations and to sign separate agreements with them.

However, when the UNP Leader and other opposition leaders agreed to such an arrangement, UNP National Organizer, S.B. Dissanayake, who is currently in India in an interview with the Lakbima newspaper, has said the party has decided to form a common consensus instead of an alliance.
