The Lanka Teacher Services Union said that Grade 5 students in some areas who sat for the scholarship exam yesterday (23) were faced with great difficulties.
The Union’s Secretary, Mahinda Jayasinghe commenting on the issue said, “The government failed at the last O/Level examination and the A/Level examination. The government has now failed at the Grade 5 scholarship exam as well.
“The shortage of 40 exam papers scheduled for the BTS College in Dadella, Galle resulted in the exam commencing late. The government has now become so helpless that it cannot even distribute an exam paper properly. We believe this |

situation to have been caused due to the failure to adopt a proper mechanism that addresses the shortcomings in the examinations sector. The government therefore is now faced with a great conflict in the education sector just like in the other sectors.
“We ask the government to stop playing with the future of these children and prevent such incidents from taking place by implementing a timely and structured programme.”
Inter University Students Federation Convener, Udul Premaratne said that the shortage of exam papers had caused a one hour delay in commencing the scholarship exam at BTS College. He said that a person had to go to the Magalle Anula Vidyalaya in a bicycle, which is about 4km from the BTS College, to bring the balance test papers and the exam that was scheduled to commence at 9.30 a.m. had therefore started only at 10.25 a.m.
Students who sat for an exam in Hall number 2 of the Kotikawatte Rajasinghe Vidyalaya also faced a similar situation on Saturday (22). Instead of part I of the English paper that was scheduled to be given at 8.30 a.m., the students were handed over part II of the English paper scheduled for that evening.
