2009-07-25 | 4.00 PM

Sources from the Opposition Leader’s Office, said CID Director, SSP Ravi Vaidyalankara had asked UNP Puttalam District parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara to come to the fourth floor to give a statement.
However, the CID had not told Bandara of any charge leveled against him.

A special unit headed by the CID Director has been established at the Department to act against opposition politicians.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse transferred Vaidyalankara from the CID to the Women and Children’s Bureau, as he was seen as a UNP supporter at the time. However, Vaidyalankara returned to the CID with the
help of a UNP member who defected to the government. He has now been placed in-charge of a unit set up to act against opposition politicians.

Several opposition politicians have already been summoned to the fourth floor by the CID saying they needed to record their statements.

Addressing the media on the matter, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said the government was trying to suppress the activities of the opposition due to its fear against the formation of an opposition political alliance.
