Lake House Chairman, Bandula Padmakumara, acting on a directive issued by Director General, Media Center for National Security (MCNS), Lakshman Hulugalle had ordered the Silumina newspaper editor to remove an interview and several photographs of Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka that were to be carried in last week’s issue of the newspaper.
Lake House Chairman had also informed all newspaper editors in the institution not to carry any article related to Fonseka without his prior approval.
In a move to silence the military chiefs, the Defence Secretary has issued a directive to that effect to all media heads under Hulugalle’s signature. |

The incident was made public in an article carried in the Ravaya newspaper titled “Defence Secretary silences military chiefs.”
Hulugalle in the letter signed by him has said that any interview, photograph or feature of the Chief of Defence Staff or any other forces head carried in the media should have prior approval of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse.
He has also said that although several similar requests made earlier to the media heads have not been adhered to, there was no need to act in such a manner any longer as the war has now ended.
Hulugalle has further noted that while any security related comment should be directed to the military spokesperson, if the media required speaking to the forces chiefs or the IGP, a request has to be forwarded to the MCNS for approval. |
