Army sources say there was a conspiracy by senior army officers and senior government officers to arrest former Eastern Commander Parakrama Pannipitiya on treasure hunting charges.
Army records indicate that after General Sarath Fonseka, it was Pannipitiya, who had all the necessary qualifications to make it to the top post.
Senior government officials have therefore acted to arrest Pannipitiya and keep him in remand custody until Presidential favorite, Jagath Jayasuirya was appointed as the new Army Chief. It is learnt that Pannipitiya’s |

release on the 20th without any charges being leveled against him was also part of the conspiracy.
Pannipitiya was released from court following a decision by the Attorney General’s Department. The two businessmen arrested along with Pannipitiya, Athula Wijesekera and Gihan Duminda Subasinghe were also released on the same day by Gampaha Chief Magistrate M.I.M. Irshad.
A senior Army officer told Lanka News Web that the senior government officials had taken advantage of the rift between Pannipitiya and Fonseka, which commenced when the latter denied a request by the former for an official residence in Colombo while serving as the Eastern Commander.
