  Ranil agrees to devolve power

2009-07-23 | 10.30 AM

UNP sources say the party along with Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe have arrived at a consensus on the basic framework on power devolution.

Wickremesinghe had reached this agreement during a discussion with Rauf Hakeem, Mangala Samaraweera and Mano Ganeshan yesterday (21).

Wickremesinghe had telephoned Hakeem, Samaraweera and Ganeshan and requested them to attend a crucial meeting to discuss the stance on power devolution.

However, due to the silence maintained by Wickremesinghe with regard to power devolution and the proposal made by S.B. Dissanayake to accept the
unitary state concept, Hakeem, Samaraweera and Ganeshan had a separate meeting in Colpetty before attending the meeting with Wickremesinghe.

According to SLMC sources, Hakeem had said they should stand by the power devolution programme and support it unconditionally.

A consensus on the basics of power devolution was later arrived at the meeting with Wickremesinghe. In order to continue with the programme agreed upon at the meeting, a committee has been appointed with four representatives from each party to continue with the discussions.
