2009-07-20 | 6.35 PM

The UNP has decided to hold discussions with other opposition political parties to form a common consensus in the opposition based on the bhoomiputhra economic policies to develop the country.

The policy statement titled “Give meaning to our land – a republic instead of a kingdom” was prepared by the UNP’s Political Affairs Committee headed by party Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and received the approval of the Working Committee chaired by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The UNP appointed a committee headed by Jayasuriya including Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Tissa Attanayake, S.B. Dissanayake, Ravi Karunanayake, Lakshman Kiriella,
Kabir Hashim and Lakshman Seneviratne to discuss the “unitary state – bhoomiputhra” proposal with other opposition parties.

In forming the broad consensus with other parties, the UNP has also placed several conditions. A few key conditions are that other parties needed to accept the “unitary state – bhoomiputhra” proposal, the presidential candidate of such an alliance would be from the UNP and that the presidential candidate as well as other candidates contesting through the alliance would have to do so under the elephant symbol.

It was also proposed at the last Working Committee that all proposals regarding the formation of the consensus be taken by the Political Affairs Committee and would need the approval of the Working Committee. In order to discuss and formulate proposals with other opposition parties, the Political Affairs Committee is to appoint sub committees for the purpose.
