  Gotabhaya makes changes in military positions

  Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaske has decided to make changes and reorganize certain sections of the army following the retirement of General Sarath Fonseka. As a first step, the Defence Secretary has appointed new officers to 31 positions in the army.

A senior official of the Defence Ministry Media Unit told Lanka News Web that although the Defence Secretary intended to reorganize the army after the end of the war, he could not do so due to objections raised by Fonseka. The reorganization programme is now expected to be successfully completed under the new Army Chief.

Military sources however say the new changes that have taken place in the army with the authorization of Army Chief,
  Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, have seen many senior officers supportive of Fonseka losing their posts and responsibilities.

According to the new changes, Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe has been appointed as the Army Chief of Staff.

Among the officers who have received promotions are seven Major Generals, 11 Brigadiers and eights Colonels.

Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe, Major General Kamal Gunaratne, Brigadier Shavendra Silva and Brigadier Chagi Gallage who played a key role in the Wanni operations have been promoted.

Jaffna Security Commander, Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe had been appointed the Army’s Chief of Staff; Mechanical Master General, Major General J.J.P.S.T. Liyanage has also been appointed Commanding Officer of the Voluntary Corp; Commander of the future maintenance of the East, Major General D.R.A.B. Jayathileka has been appointed Army’s Executive General; Army’s Chief of Staff, Major General Rajitha de Silva has been appointed Jaffna Security Commander; Director Operations in Colombo, Major General Mano Perera has also been appointed Chief of Staff Officer; 53rd Brigade Commander, Major General Kamal Gunaratne has been appointed as Wanni Security Commander and Director Operations in Colombo, Major General Mahesh Senanayake has been appointed to the Joint Operations Command.

Also, Brigadier Z. Abeysekera has been appointed Commander of the future maintenance of the East; Brigadier T.R. Meedin to the Joint Operations Command; Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe as the Chief Signals Officer at the Headquarters; Brigadier P.T. A. Weerasinghe as the Director General for Discipline; Brigadier D.D.A. Perera as the 58th Brigade Commander; Brigadier P.W. Jayawardena as the Director Planning; Brigadier J.R. Kulathunga as the Commanding Officer of the Diyathalawa Training Camp; Brigadier Kumudu Perera as the 51st Brigade Commander; Brigadier Chagi Gallage as the 53rd Brigade Commander and Brigadier D.D. Keppetiwalana as the 59th Brigade Commander.

The Colonels who have received new appointments are Colonel P.G.P. Dias, Colonel W.R. Palihakkara, Colonel K.P.A. Jayasekera, Colonel A.M. Dharmasiri, Colonel Mahinda Weerasuriya, Colonel K.A.W. Kumarapperuma, Colonel Indunil Silva and Colonel M. Kulatunga.
