A senior UNP parliamentarian told Lanka News Web that Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had clearly stated that a solution to the Tamil people’s problem could not be found through a federal administrative structure.
The Opposition Leader had made this statement during a discussion held on Friday (17) morning with SLMC Leader Rauf Hakeem and SLFP (M) Wing Leader Mangala Samaraweera where they were presented with the “unitary and bhoomiputhra policy proposals” approved by the UNP’s Working Committee recently.
The parliamentarian also said the Opposition Leader had even stated the fact to the Tamil Diaspora when he met |

them in London recently.
DPF Leader Mano Ganeshan, who was also invited for the meeting at the Opposition Leader’s office at Cambridge Terrace, did not attend it.
UNP Secretary Tissa Attanayake was also present at the meeting.
During the meeting, the SLMC leader had explained that speaking about a unitary state and going back on a federal solution would be a disadvantageous to the UNP at a time it is faring well in the campaign for the upcoming Jaffna Municipal Council election.
Wickremesinghe had however said that speaking clearly about the party’s stance at present would be beneficial for the party in the long term.
