Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe says that a decision on the role of the ICRC in the north could only be taken after receiving a report on the organization’s future action plan.

The Minister made this statement in response to a query by the Ravaya newspaper whether the government announcement about limiting the ICRC’s operations in the east was applicable to other international NGOs.

Samarasinghe also said that the government had not requested the ICRC to close down its offices in the east. However, he said the government had informed the ICRC to reduce the operations carried out by the organization
in the north and east as the war has ended and there was no longer a requirement for the international aid agency to intervene during emergency situations.

When queried about the latest development, ICRC Media Spokesperson in Colombo, Sarasi Wijeratne said the organization has decided to close down three of its offices in the east following a request made by the government.

As for limiting operations in the north, Wijeratne said the ICRC has not yet arrived at a decision with regard to the matter.

However, she said the ICRC would from now on concentrate on treating civilians wounded during the war and resettling the war displaced.
