Sources from Temple Trees say that newly appointed Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe is closely related to the President.
Apart from the maternal relationship between the Samarasinghe and the Rajapakses, the two families also have a close friendship.
It was Samarasinghe’s grandfather, Hemachandra Gunasekera, who had brought young Mahinda Rajapakse to Colombo and found him employment after school education.
Gunasekera, who was a clerk at the Vidyodaya University, had found employment for young Rajapakse at the university library as a library assistant. |

Thisara Samarasinghe’s brothers, Palitha and Isuru also have a close friendship with the President.
Apart from the President, Samarasinghe is also related to additional presidential secretary Gamini Senarath.
Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda was given an extension by the President to continue in his post till September this year. However, following a sudden change of heart, Karannagoda was sent on retirement and Samarasinghe was appointed as the new Commander.
If the new appointment was not made, Samarasinghe would have had to go on retirement on July 15 according to naval regulations.
