Presidential Advisor Vasudeva Nanayakkara says the war displaced living in IDP camps in the north are faced with a worse situation than death.

Nanayakkara has said that these displaced people who are living in parched land in tents with only half the required water supply were not suspects detained in remand on detention orders.

He has noted that while about 6,000 children suffered from malnutrition in the IDP camps, about 1,000 of them were in serious condition, adding that if serious attention was not paid to the issue, it would result in the death of these children.

According to Nanyakkara, even criminals are not being held in the manner over 300,000 displaced persons are being kept in camps on the north similar to internment camps without any visitation as well. He said even the 2 million odd people displaced in Afghanistan received better facilities.

He has further stated that due to these conditions, people living in one section have made an attempt to forcibly enter another section in the camp due to the poor facilities in their respective section. Also, these displaced persons are too afraid to speak to the armed forces personnel to explain their plight.

Nanayakkara observed that he plans to request for permission from the President to visit the IDP camps to receive first hand the complaints of the displaced persons. He also noted that there was also need for an independent debate to discuss the plight of the displaced persons.
