Nearly 300,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) herded into barbed wired internment camps are going through a terrible time and await mayhem when the North East monsoon strikes in October. The Government is hell-bent in keeping these IDPs for an indefinite period in these camps until the settlement of Sinhala communities in the lands previously owned and occupied by these IDPs, to make the “ethnic mix” the President is talking about and establishment of a sufficient number of military camps to suppress any Tamil uprising in the future, a matter which is in the hands of the brother, Secretary of Defense and the Commander of the Army, who is going to be the Chief of Defense Staff very soon.
Meanwhile, the Government of India, which has been requesting the Sri Lankan President to find a political solution to the Tamil issue, which is a boiling question in the South Indian state Tamil-Nadu has a different agenda. Knowing very well that the Sri Lankan Government is purposely and willfully delaying the resettlement of IDPs in their former homesteads, the Indian Government has now offered assistance in resettlement, housing and demining the lands, which are mined at an unbelievable concentration of “a mine per every square centimeter” according to the interview given by the President to “The Hindu”. The Government of India, which received an overwhelming mandate for the second term is clearly pushing the Government of Sri Lanka to resettle the IDPs very early and that is why they have been harping on the 180 day deadline voluntarily set by Sri Lanka. It is obvious that Manmohan Singh led Government does not mince their words and want the GoSL to keep to the promises given.
However, the Sri Lankan Government now has to go back to the drawing boards to find new excuses acceptable to the Indian Government to keep the IDPs in internment camps for a prolonged period of time until they completed their “mission colonization and militarization of the North” under a beautifully worded “Northern Spring”. Mr.V.Anandasangaree of the Tamil United Liberation Front has now realized this bitter truth and has started writing “love letters” to the President at an enhanced rate. |
