Astrologer Chandrasiri Bandara, who was detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following an order issued by the Defence Secretary charging him with conspiring to topple the government and to assassinate the President, was released yesterday (3) evening.

The Magistrate who inquired in to the issue ordered Bandara’s release stating the CID has not forwarded sufficient evidence to support the charges leveled against him.

Addressing a gathering attended by the likes of S.B. Dissanayake and Mangala Samaraweera at the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) headquarters, Bandara had
said that Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake would unexpectedly become the President of the country like D.B. Wijetunge and that after September, the Opposition Leader would experience a good period.

The speeches delivered at the event had been recorded by a certain person who had then handed it over to Gamini Gunaratne, also known as Batta. Gunaratne it is learnt has handed the tapes to Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapakse, who called on the CID to arrest Bandara.

Bandara was arrested on June 24.
