Civilians in the North are facing difficulties in reclaiming motor bikes, cars, vans and agriculture machinery that were taken by the military when they fled to no fire zones during the war. The government initially stated that all such vehicles and machinery would be returned to the civilians once the war ended.
Civilians from Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu say that the engines and important spare parts in most of the vehicles have been removed and that they are not handed back their vehicles even after providing the required documents.
They are also facing difficulties since the documents handed by them to the divisional secretariats, police and army camps are not returned to them. Displaced persons have also complained that some of the vans and motorbikes owned by them are being used by the military by using different number plates.
