JVP sources said that the UNP has agreed to the proposal made by the party put forward former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka as the common candidate from the opposition at the next presidential election.

The source said the UNP has agreed to a proposal made by the JVP in an unofficial level to support a common candidate focusing on abolishing the executive presidency instead of fielding a candidate from the UNP at the next Presidential election.

Leaders of the opposition alliance are already considering the names of former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka, former Chief Justice Sarath
  N. Silva and a former civil servant proposed by the JVP as possible candidates to be fielded by the opposition at the next Presidential election.

In this backdrop Karu Jayasuriya and S.B. Dissanayake who were initially hoping of contesting the next Presidential election from the UNP have told the media that they would not contest at the election.

Although unofficial discussions have commenced between UNP and JVP representatives on this matter, a agreement is yet to be reached with regard to the common candidate.
