| In May 2009, President Barack Obama referred to Tissainayagam as an emblematic example of the distressing reality of journalists jailed for their writing. On 31st August 2009, Tissainayagam was sentenced by the High Court in Colombo to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
