The Sunday Lanka newspaper has reported that attempts to appoint Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse to parliament through the national list and to appoint a former Navy Chief to the top post in the defence establishment has created a conflict among the security forces.

The Lanka newspaper, which is the unofficial newspaper of the JVP, has also said that the attempt to reduce the powers vested with Fonseka’s new post, the Chief of Defence Staff, has also attributed to the present conflict.
Reliable military personnel confirmed the story carried in the newspaper last week where it was reported that the reason for reducing Fonseka’s powers was due to his opposition to carry out several political orders given to him.
The security forces believe that the President’s decision to release all army deserters, especially during the height of the war, was also a move to undermine Fonseka’s authority.

Fonseka during his tenure as Army Chief had paid great attention to maintaining discipline among the forces personnel.
